Wonder what your teen has been looking at on their phone lately? He/she could be checking out one of these top apps that are getting attention so far this year.
Top trending apps in 2026 are no surprise and not unknown to any parent no matter what generation you hail from, we’ve all heard them mentioned even if we don’t use them ourselves.
- YouTube: not surprisingly, topping the list as the most used app among teens yet. From videos for entertainment to education, a wide array of topics are covered in the long and ‘shorts’ form.
- TikTok: while YouTube may be the most used app, TikTok is the app stealing the most time from teens today. The endless scroll and constant entertaining video stream is tough to break away from, even for adults.
- Instagram: from news to product reviews to connecting with friends, like-minded individuals, or similarly interested people, the ‘gram still has teens’ attention cornered again this year.
- Snapchat: while it may fall further back in the rankings, Snapchat is actually the place teens will most likely message and post in, multiple times a day. Even though the app is highly discouraged to be used by teens from multiple “media awareness” sources, it is high on usage among teens across the U.S.

After the “Big 4”, there are a number of other popular apps that are newer to the scene. It is worth learning about these apps in case your teen desires to download and use them.
- Locket Widget: a ‘bestie only’ single photo share platform with no endless scroll.
- Character.ai: where a teen can essentially talk online to any personality.
- Discord: allows gamers with different interfaces to talk to each other online while gaming.
- Wizz: basically Tinder for teenagers to help increase their Snapchat friend count.
- Partiful: an event planning landing spot
- Photomath: take a photo of a hard math problem, and the AI Math Whiz helps you through it, step by step.
- ChatGPT: pretty much Google, only more concise, and helping them understand difficult concepts or answer a question they have.
- BeReal or Lapse: to share a personal photo only with friends, and to see photos or updates, only from friends.
Interestingly, the research done also shows that teens today are being more selective in the apps they are giving their time and attention to. While the top apps are still the top apps consuming time, streamlining their time has become evident in teens today.
Perhaps we’ve begun parenting to encourage different habits in our teens, or even model them ourselves, with our digital overload we’ve been experiencing in the recent past?
Perhaps teens are tired of watching parents endlessly scroll with no apparent purpose to it?
Perhaps we are so tired of technology that we just want to be back to the basics of life?
Perhaps we can see how AI can help us streamline many things we used to outsource so that we can better use our time for other activities?
The truth remains as our time is a gift from the Lord and we are commanded to use it wisely. We should continue to educate ourselves and our children and also pray that this trend of minimizing screen time continues. Remember, the best way to help your teen is to be present and interested in what they have going on, especially on their phone.
