If you’ve ever said “Hey Google (or Siri or Alexa)”, and gotten a response, you’ve used Artificial Intelligence, or AI. Were you even aware of it?
AI has been around for many years. It’s been at the center of science fiction stories, and theorized about by researchers for decades. But the computing power of the past few decades and the prevalence of the Internet has allowed many AI advancements that are now part of our everyday lives.
Besides the Personal Assistants already mentioned, some other products that use AI include Pandora’s music service, Nest learning thermostat and other Smart Home technologies, automatic flying drones, self-driving cars, and emails that auto-fill as you type. (learn more)
AI can also help doctors diagnose diseases, by combining information from other doctors around the world and making suggestions to doctors based on that pooled knowledge. (learn more)
AI has many positive influences on society. It also has its drawbacks. Many of these devices collect information about their users and send it back to the manufacturer. Be sure to check the Privacy settings on your devices.
Besides invading our privacy, AI could also lead to downright dangerous technologies, such as autonomous weapons. It could also take away our jobs, and mis-lead us in ways that weren’t possible before. (learn more)
But AI is not a Big Bad Scary technology that should be avoided. If we stay aware of its applications, use our God-given common sense, and use the privacy settings meant for our protection, AI can be used safely.
As we consider intelligence that is artificial, may we seek the true wisdom that can only be given from above.
Proverbs 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
