Generative AI

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that creates new content–such as text, images, code, music, and videos–based on patterns it has learned from existing data. One of the most common generative AI tools is ChatGPT. To use ChatGPT, simply ask a question or type a prompt, and it will produce a response. If the response is not satisfactory, you can continue prompting it until it meets your needs. Some people have even replaced their traditional search engines with generative AI.

Perhaps you are wondering what the usefulness of generative AI is. The following are a few examples of “everyday” generative AI use:

  1. Writing aid: Many people use the writing ability of AI to assist with something they have created or use it to actually create an essay, blog post, or other text-based project. For example, you can upload something you have composed and ask AI to provide feedback on how to improve it. You can keep prompting it until you are satisfied with the result. You can also prompt it to write an essay with certain parameters. The options for using generative AI as a writing tool are extensive, including drafting emails, summarizing articles, and providing outlines for projects, just to name a few.
  1. Personal assistant: You can use AI as an assistant to help with meal planning, recipe suggestions, trip planning, home decorating/organizing, etc. For instance, you could ask AI to create a meal plan for the next month, while providing recipes and a grocery list for each week. If you see there are meals your family will not like, you could tell it certain foods you want to exclude. Over time, if you have an account for a generative AI tool and use it regularly, you can train it to learn your preferences and automatically adjust future plans.
  1. Information gathering: Perhaps you have noticed that when you use Google as a search engine there is an AI overview at the top. This is a summary of various articles that tries to help you find a quicker answer. AI can also help with researching various topics, from DIY projects to laws and regulations on a certain topic.

Generative AI has become an everyday tool that can help people with a wide variety of tasks. However, users must be cautious of the information or answers obtained from generative AI because they are not always accurate. Furthermore, too great of a dependency on it could lead to a decrease in creativity and critical thinking. Overall, while generative AI can make daily life more convenient and efficient, it should be used thoughtfully and responsibly.
